Through the funding from Boston Scientific a new wing has been opened at Maryfield- Western Alzheimers residential centre in Athenry.
Breda Mc Cann- a family carer for her Mother Eileen who has vascular dementia is passionate about providing better communities for people suffering from Alzheimers nominated Western Alzheimers for Boston Scientific’s “charity of the year” and has worked closely with the charity for many years.
Breda led the Boston Scientific charity committee and was the driving force behind many onsite fundraising events – close to 100 events over the two years. The additional three bedrooms and laundry and storage facilities were made possible through the €230,000 fundraised by Boston Scientific employees who worked with the charity for two years.
Pat Holmes, CEO, Western Alzheimers says the extension will allow services to be offered to even more families in the West of Ireland.
“Our residential facility in Athenry is a home away from home for many families around Galway and in the West of Ireland; our range of services offer essential respite to family members who may be full or part time carers to those with Alzheimer’s disease. The Boston Wing will enable us to offer this support to even more families in the West of Ireland and we would like to sincerely thank the employees in Boston Scientific for making the Boston Wing a reality through their hard work and fundraising efforts.”
