BEFRIENDING SERVICE
This volunteer initiative was started last year to provide companionship for the person with dementia whilst the family carer gets a break. We have successfully “matched” 30 befrienders with clients and are currently recruiting for more volunteers.
What is Involved?
This service offers friendship and stimulation. It also supports the carer by providing a break for them. The key is “compatible companionship. Each client will be twinned with a suitable friend. This support may be inside or outside the client’s home.
Hours
The service offered will be two or three hours weekly/fortnightly, during which time it is envisaged that a relationship will grow into a friendship. Continuity of the relationship is of paramount importance and volunteers will be selected partly on their capacity and willingness to make a long-term commitment. We are looking for individuals who can give 2-3 hours a week in the homes of people living with dementia. The supports would range from companionship, meeting for coffee and generally supporting them in their own homes. This support is to offer the family carers a break from their caring role. Please note that this is a befriending service and not a personal care assistant support service. Full training and induction will be provided.
Skills
Kind, caring, compassionate and good listener. Dementia awareness an advantage but not a requirement.
If you are interested in signing up or require further information please come along to this events.
