Dementia Advisor

The dementia advisor provides an individualised and signposting  and emotional support service to people living with dementia, their families and carers. It is a free and confidential service that can be carried out on a home visit and/or over the phone.

Dementia Nurse Specialist (DNS)

The DNS provides holistic, person focused support to individuals and families living with a dementia diagnosis and changing needs as they navigate their journey. They signpost specialised dementia services for the person living with dementia and their carers. The DNS liaises with other professionals in Health care and community settings, carers and volunteers. Timely and appropriate interventions in relation to an early diagnosis of dementia are promoted.

The DNS contributes to regular guidance and training in the care of the person living with dementia with other health carers. They facilitate family carers in enhancing their understanding of how to address the needs of the person living with dementia. The DNS promotes well being and self-care for both PWD and their carers ensuring the PWD is involved with all decision-making processes where appropriate. The DNS endeavours to support local communities in developing dementia friendly services.

Volunteer Befriending Service

The service is designed to alleviate the negative impacts loneliness has on mental and physical health through companionship by volunteers visiting or calling to the person’s home at least once a week. It is aimed at anyone with a diagnosis of dementia who has limited social contact or feels particularly isolated or lonely. While the befriender is in the home, the carer can take a break.

Family Carer Training

These programmes support and educate families and carers who care for a person with dementia. They aim to enable families and carers to recognise the emotions, goals and coping strategies of the person with dementia. The course is run over 5 consecutive weeks- 1 evening per week.

In Home Respite- Sitter Service

Western Alzheimers is committed to training and developing it’s services at community level. Through this service both the trainee caregiver and the person living with dementia gain invaluable experience.

This in home ‘sitter service’ allows our staff to develop, train and learn while offering a person-centred support in the persons own home, with the support and guidance of the Services Manager. Light touch activities, such as hand massage, singing, reading, listening to music are some of the activities offered, but they are  based on the likes and dislikes of the person with dementia.

In Home Respite Service (IRS)

Everyone needs a break. In Home Respite care provides carers a temporary rest from care giving, while the person living with dementia continues to receive care in their home and community. Western Alzheimers provides a one to one individualised support service, where the service is tailored to the ability of the person living with dementia, their interests and hobbies and their location.
Our In Home Respite service community- based support workers are trained to communicate and engage to a meaningful level with the person living with dementia. We focus on the ability and independence of the person and encourage social engagement as a means of maintaining the person living with dementia. We take the time to learn about the person first before tailoring a support plan which can include anything from going for a walk to baking, gardening or going for a drive and a coffee.

Marian House Respite Home

Supporting hundreds of families with a “home from home philosophy”

Marian House Respite Centre is a purpose built facility located in the village of Ballindine, Co. Mayo. It is a specialist dementia care service that provides 24-hour respite care. Marian House is a dedicated short stay 10-bed facility that was the first in Ireland to be planned completely with Dementia patients in mind. A large ring-shaped walkway in the Centre of the house allows guests to walk freely without losing their way.

We offer respite care to caregivers looking after loved ones suffering from all kinds of dementia in their own home. Our primary focus is to cater to people with dementia from the counties of Galway, Mayo and Roscommon, however we do cater for people from other counties.

We acknowledge the importance of facilitating individuals to remain in their local community and strive to provide a service to meet individuals social needs.

Marian House is registered with the Health Information and Quality Authority.

Our Ethos: We are committed to providing care that consistently meets the specific needs and expectations of our residents & their relatives, providing a programme of care that ensures optimal quality.

Marian House promotes a restraint free environment.

We are currently extending it and it is currently under construction to increase capacity to a 20 Bed Centre of excellence.

Support Group Meetings

These support groups for carers of people with dementia. They provide an opportunity to meet others in a similar situation, to share stories and experiences, and access information and practical advice in a relaxed, understanding and supportive environment.
